LY Families: Courtney + Parker

There are so many things I dream of doing as a photographer. Like photographing a wedding in a National Park! Or offering one-stop, styled senior packages (hair, makeup, wardrobe styling! Can you imagine?!). And then there’s smaller scale things – like planning a styled shoot, figuring out a consistent office time/editing schedule and shooting family sessions at the beach. Well, somewhere on that list is a line item that reads something like “photograph a session with flower crowns”…

So, yeah…when Courtney reached out to me and asked if I was interested in this cute, styled mommy + me session with her blonde, curly-haired little girl…ALL THE HEART EYES PEOPLE. This is the stuff my photographer dreams are made of! And after wrestling with annoying weather forecasts, we finally had the opportunity to spend an evening together!

And it was utterly perfect. We played in the field and spent the majority of the time laughing at Parker; she’s HILARIOUS and smart and so stinkin’ cute and she KNOWS it! And those tulle skirts and flower crowns and that beautiful setting…it was perfection. Enjoy my favorites!

LY Families: The Donius Family

I’ve always imagined having a big family – lots of kids close in age! However, I’ve also been really surprised at how HARD motherhood is for me. Don’t get me wrong, before having my own children, I knew it was a hard job. But I’ve always wanted to be a mommy…so it’ll be easy for me. Ha! Hardly.

But I don’t think you really know until you’re REALLY in it; the lack of sleep, the loss of self (in a sense), the loss of control. Geez, that all sounds so negative! But I’m also learning that I’m terrible at giving myself grace in this season of life. I’m still aiming for that perfectly tidy house and healthy home-cooked meals and well-dressed kids and lush vegetable gardens and well-behaved kids sharing kindly at playdates (NEVER happens..haha!) and a well-managed photography business (HA! Also never happens!).

And I’ve watched the sweet Donius family from afar grow their sweet family. I’ve practically known Jen my whole life and am so grateful that Facebook has allowed me to keep tabs on her and her family. They’ve had four beautiful children (and have five sweet babies in heaven!), moved across the country, moved back to the area, opened a Chic-fil-A…and she homeschools! Talk about Wonder-Mom! She’s amazing! And very soon they will welcome their 5th baby – another girl! And while I loved spending time getting to know her children during their session, it was the You’ve Got This, Momma! encouragement that stood out from our evening together. I’m so blessed to be a mother and SO BLESSED to have so many modeling motherhood WELL. Maybe I’ll have more kids, after all…. 😉

Enjoy my favorites of this cute family!

LY Lifestyle: Casey + Dustin’s Gender Reveal!

I always LOVE when I get the opportunity to photograph something I never have before…like a few years ago when I bride asked me to photograph her wedding, but instructed me that she did not want any posed pictures, but rather just wanted me to capture the day and moments as they happen. CHALLENGING. But so awesome. As I’m continuing to grow in this and really figure out my niche, I’m discovering how much I prefer to shoot in this way; candid, editorial style.

So when Casey contacted me last-minute to see if I could photograph their gender reveal party…and proceeded to tell me their plans to use colored powder (you know..like they use for those Color Runs), I knew I had to adjust my schedule to make it happen. And I’m SO GLAD I DID. Not only was it so exciting…it also made my little photographer heart so happy to capture REAL emotion!

I’m SO excited to share these pictures! And a little PSA: I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHING GENDER REVEALS…just sayin’…

LY Families: The Reeds

When Lexi and I started making plans for her family’s spring session, she mentioned that she wanted the location to be springy; flowers, green – lots of color! Flower farm? Eh..we might be not able to count on having enough blooms. An orchard? Sure, but we’re going to be past the peak of the blossoms. And I’ve just been dying to do something different – find a new location, change up my “go-t0” shooting habits, etc. So when this adorable greenhouse session showed up in my Pinterest feed…I knew it would be the perfect fit for the Reed’s family session!

I’ve been photographing this crew since little Piper was just 9 months old. Lexi was one of the first to reach out to me when I was still SO new at this and still trying to figure it all out. I love it when past clients become repeat customers: I love reconnecting with them, love to see how their children have grown/changed, but most of all, I love that I’m able to [hopefully] deliver them images that are a little better than what I’ve given them in the past. While it’s hard to see if my work has developed and improved in the day to day…I certainly see it when I glance through my portfolio – and especially when I can put two different sessions of the same family side by side.

A huge THANK YOU to Lovell’s Nursery in Hagerstown for being so willing to let us shoot this session, even with their customers wandering around! Enjoy a few of one of my favorite #LYFamilies!!!

LY Maternity: The Myers

It’s hard to believe this beautiful momma-to-be and I used to ride the bus together in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I can just imagine the conversations we had as we cruised around on Miss Debbie’s yellow bus, #342. And then we talked about first crushes and gel pens and those middle school teachers we couldn’t stand. A few years later high school came and bus routes changed and we started hitching rides to school with our older sisters or friends that could drive. Homecoming float decorating and term papers and Mr. Gift’s psychology class and prom. And then one day…graduation.

It has been years since Melissa and I have spent time together. Sure, we would run in to each other around town every so often, but, literally, YEARS have passed since we’ve had conversation. So when she sent me a message on Instagram a few weeks ago asking if I’d be interested in photographing a gender reveal session for her and her husband, Brent…I was giddy! And I also knew that even though she only booked a 30-minute session…that we would spent well over an hour talking and catching up on life.

It’s such an absolute blessing the way this photography business brings all of these old friends back in to my life. I LOVED celebrating this exciting new season of Brent + Melissa’s life, as they prepare to welcome their sweet baby boy in September. Melissa, you are a BEAUTIFUL mommy already…and I cannot wait to see and Brent you flourish in your new roles as Mommy + Daddy!
